How to Prepare, Print, and Cut Sewing Patterns
Before you begin sewing, it's important to understand how to handle and cut patterns properly.
Check the Size and Design Before Cutting
After purchasing a pattern, always confirm the correct size and design that fits your dog. Sizes can vary depending on the brand or layout, so make sure to choose based on your dog’s measurements.
Print the Pattern at the Correct Size
Patterns come in A4, US Letter, or A1 formats. Each requires a different printing approach.
- A4/Letter: Print at 100% scale (no scaling), and tape the sheets together along the alignment marks.
- A1: Print at a local copy shop if you prefer large, pre-aligned format.
Lay the Pattern on the Fabric and Cut
Place the pattern on your fabric, aligning the grainline with the fabric’s warp direction. Pin the pattern securely or use weights.
Then, cut carefully along the edges using sharp fabric scissors. If using a folded fabric, align the fold with the pattern’s “wa” (fold) mark.
Tips for Cutting
- Don’t stretch the fabric while pinning or cutting.
- Move your scissors smoothly, keeping one hand steady on the fabric.
- Use notches to mark alignment points for easier sewing later.
